Everything You Need To Know About Stone

Why Should I Use Stone?

Stone is beautiful, hardwearing and a material for life. There is a reason monuments constructed 100s of years ago were built using stone and still stand proudly today.

With a vast array of colours, textures, patterns and veins to choose from, there is a stone for every aesthetic.

What is the Difference Between Marble, Granite, Limestone and Onyx?

These are all natural stones, but were formed in the earth through different processes which give each of them their different characteristics.

Marble: Marble is a metamorphic stone which means it has changed. Marble in fact once lived its life as limestone, until it was subjected to heat and pressure many years ago and mixed in with other minerals to become the beautiful marble we know today with its striking colours and veins.  Marble is a great materials to use for flooring, furniture, feature walls, bathroom suites, vanities and basins.

Granite: Granite is an igneous rock and was formed through the solidification and cooling of magma over millions of years. It is a very hard material which is perfect to be used on kitchen countertops as it is strong and resistant to stains and acids.

Limestone: The predecessor to marble. It is composed of calcium carbonate fossils. Limestone has a smooth, grained appearance and is an excellent exterior finish. Some of my favourite applications of limestone are on the Banco Madrid and Apple Store, Barcelona. Limestone makes for great external paving and external wall cladding.

Onyx: A semi-precious stone, and you can see why. This gorgeous and unique stone was formed in limestone caves as the water dripped as stalagmites and stalactites. It is a delicate and transparent stone which can be backlit to create a stunning feature. To make a statement with Onyx, use it to create a glowing bar or vanity.

Natural vs Engineered Stone?

Man-made vs Natural Stone is a question of your personal preference and taste.

Natural stone has a depth that man-made stone does not, and offers a wide range of colours and veins, making each block and each slab different which adds character to a space.

Maintenance wise, natural stone can always be polished and cleaned to bring it back to looking brand new.

Man-made stone offers the perks of being easy to maintain, uniform veins and prints and bespoke and unique patterns can be created using special printing technology, metal inlays and gold leaf applications.
